The 911 is Porsche's iconic rear-engine sports car, produced today in coupe and cabriolet versions that was updated for 2012. The 911 first went into production as the 1964 911 Carrera, as Porsche's first six-cylinder model and a replacement for the legendary Porsche 356. For 2004, a 40th Anniversary edition was offered and the Turbo Cabriolet and the Carrera 4S Cabriolet were added, the first time since 1989 that a Turbo Cabriolet was offered. The 2005 Carrera and Carrera S debuted the next generation of 911, an evolution of the original 911 silhouette, with a return to oval headlights with separate turn indicators. The Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S return for 2006. The 911 Turbo and GT3 is added to the 911 lineup for 2007.
The 2012 Porsche 911 represents the next generation of this iconic sports car. Initially available as a Carrera Coupe or Carrera S Coupe, the new 911 is longer, lower, has a wider track and is lighter than its predecessor. Power on the standard coupe comes from a 3.4-liter 350-horsepower engine that not only provides a boost in power over the previous model, it also improves fuel economy. The Carrera S also gets more power – its 3.8-liter engine now produces 400 horsepower. A number of new features are introduced on the 2012 911, including the world's first 7-speed manual transmission in a passenger car. Other features include start/stop technology, redesigned suspension and a complete new interior inspired by the Carrera GT supercar. The rest of the 911 lineup, including the Targa, Turbo and GTS, remain primarily unchanged for 2012. These trims will be updated to the updated platform over the next several months.
