The 5-Series is BMW's luxury midsize sedan and sport wagon, a car that has been a favorite among driving enthusiasts since it was first imported to the U.S. in 1975. The 5-Series sedan was redesigned for 2004 and the sports wagon returned to the lineup for 2006 as the 530xi Sports Wagon. The 5-Series has always emphasized performance and an enjoyable driving experience, offering a variety of engine choices as well as both manual and automatic transmissions. For 2008 the BMW 5-Series receives a new naming nomenclature, a horsepower upgrade and a refreshed exterior. The 300-horsepower engine in the 535xi is the most powerful Sports Wagon BMW has ever offered in the U.S. The 2010 BMW 5-Series adds the fourth-generation iDrive system when equipped with the optional navigation system. A new M Sport Package is offered.
The 5-Series Gran Turismo is BMW's new midsize luxury hatchback that joins the lineup between the 5-Series Sedan and the 5-Series Sports Wagon and aims to aims to combine various attributes of a luxury sedan, a station wagon and an SUV. Designed to carry five persons in luxury, the 5-Series Gran Turismo has a 3-passenger rear bench seat that adjusts forward and aft almost four inches and a unique bulkhead that separates the passenger compartment from the cargo area. The bi-modal trunk will open like either a hatch or like a trunk for added versatility. The 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo is offered in two trim levels, 535i and 550i. The 535i is powered by a new 300-horsepower twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine and the 550i is powered by a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. Both the 535i and 550i feature a new 8-speed automatic transmission for improved fuel efficiency. The Brake Energy Regeneration system controls the alternator so that it operates more efficiently and only charges the battery during deceleration and braking.
