"The M3 is the high-performance version of BMW's 3-Series and is completely redesigned for 2008, powered for the first time by a V8 engine. Offered in coupe, sedan and convertible versions, the M3 is even more aggressive than its predecessor with a power dome in the middle of the aluminum hood, a rear diffuser, and gills in the front fenders that include the blue/purple/red M3 logo. The M3 began as a limited-edition model designed to meet minimum production requirements for touring car racing in Europe and Asia. The M3 arrived in the U.S. in the late '80s and was sold through the 1991 model year as a high-performance 2-door coupe. The M3 returned as a coupe for the 1995 model year, and in 1997 an M3 sedan was added. The M3 convertible completed the M3 lineup in 1998. The M3 sedan was dropped in 1999 not to be seen again until 2008. The third-generation M3 was offered as a coupe and convertible from 2001-2006. The all-new 2008 BMW M3 is powered by a 414-horsepower 4.0-liter V8 engine combined with a 6-speed manual transmission and Variable M Differential Lock. A new 7-speed M Double-Clutch transmission with Drivelogic is offered, specifically designed for a high-speed engine and to shift without interruption of power and traction. There are eleven electronically-controlled driving programs in M-specific set-up; five shift programs in the automatic mode and six in the manual mode including Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standstill.
The M5 is the high-performance version of the BMW 5-Series sedan which was redesigned for 2004, and the M5 has been on hiatus since the 2003 model year. The M5 returned to the lineup for 2006 powered by a 500-horsepower V10 engine mated to a seven-speed sequential-manual gearbox (SMG). Beginning with the founding of BMW, M has always stood for Motoren - German for engines, and now also stands for BMW's specialized motorsports group responsible for developing high-performance cars. The BMW M group began with the limited-production mid-engine M1 in 1978 and in 1988 the first M5 was built, powered by a 256-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine. The M5 returned for a three-year run in 1991, powered by a 310-horsepower 6-cylinder. A new M5 debuted as a 2000 model and continued through the 2003 model year, powered by a 394-horsepower 4.9-liter V8 engine. The 2008 BMW M5 received updates to the interior and exterior including a new front air dam, more pronounced center air intake, reshaped brake air inlets and new optical lenses for headlights and taillights. Inside, the M5 features new door panels that include larger door pockets and wood trim along the tops of the doors. Also new is a 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox and the Premium Sound audio system is now available as a stand-alone option.
The M6 is the high-performance version of the 6-Series that shares the 500-horsepower V10 engine with the M5 sedan. BMW does not refer to the M6 as the flagship of the M Car lineup, but more of a complement and a stablemate to the M5 sedan, with both cars delivering the top level of BMW M power and sophistication. The M6 returns to the BMW lineup after a hiatus of almost 20 years. The M6 features exterior and interior styling that reflects a balance of performance and luxury. The exterior styling is aggressive and one unique feature is the carbon fiber roof which not only offers weight savings but also lowers the center of gravity for performance improvements and adds a unique element of style. For 2007 a convertible version is added to the lineup. The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible continue unchanged from 2007.
The Z4 M is the high-performance version of BMW's two-seat coupe and roadster that evolved from the Z3. The Z4 Roadster replaced the Z3 for 2003 and the Z4 Coupe joined the lineup for 2006, along with the M Coupe and M Roadster. The Z3 was the first of a new wave of German roadsters that was introduced in early 1996. The Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold in America since 1959, when the legendary 507 was discontinued. The M Roadster joined the Z3 Roadster for 1998 and the M Coupe debuted as a 1999 model, followed by the Z3 Coupe. While the Z3 featured retro styling that was reminiscent of classic roadsters, the Z4 features modern flame-surface styling. The 2008 BMW Z4 M Roadster and Coupe continue unchanged from 2007."
