M Series Overview

"Beginning with the founding of BMW, M has always stood for Motoren - German for engines. Today, M stands for more than just engines - it symbolizes BMW's specialized motorsports group responsible for the development of ultra-high-performance automobiles. The first ultra-high-performance BMW was the M1, which was built in limited numbers in 1978 - 450, to be exact. The M3 is the high-performance version of BMW's 3-Series and began as a limited-edition model designed to meet minimum production requirements for touring car racing in Europe and Asia. The M3 arrived in the U.S. in the late '80s and was sold through the 1991 model year as a high-performance 2-door coupe. The M3 returned as a coupe for the 1995 model year, and in 1997 an M3 sedan was added. The M3 convertible completed the M3 lineup in 1998. The M3 sedan was dropped in 1999.

The M5 is the high-performance version of the BMW 5-Series sedan which was redesigned for 2004, and the M5 has been on hiatus since the 2003 model year. The M5 returns to the lineup for 2006 powered by a 500-horsepower V10 engine mated to a seven-speed sequential-manual gearbox (SMG). Beginning with the founding of BMW, M has always stood for Motoren - German for engines, and now also stands for BMW's specialized motorsports group responsible for developing high-performance cars. The BMW M group began with the limited-production mid-engine M1 in 1978 and in 1988 the first M5 was built, powered by a 256-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine. The M5 returned for a three-year run in 1991, powered by a 310-horsepower 6-cylinder. A new M5 debuted as a 2000 model and continued through the 2003 model year, powered by a 394-horsepower 4.9-liter V8 engine. The 2006 BMW M5 debuts a new 500-horsepower 5.0-liter V10 engine, the first V10 in a road-going BMW, and a new seven-speed SMG transmission which allows the driver to shift with either the lever in the console or with paddles behind the steering wheel. Compared to the previous generation SMG, shifts are 20 percent faster and Drivelogic allows the driver to select from seven different programs to change the shifting characteristics. Other features include M Variable Differential Lock; M Version electronically-controlled suspension; special steering system that is quicker than 5-Series steering; largest and most powerful brakes ever offered on a BMW; 19-inch alloy wheels, M-calibrated Dynamic Stability Control; MDrive menu for the iDrive system; M5 updates to bumpers, rocker panels, front spoiler, trunk lid, and exterior trim; Merino leather upholstery; heated M sport seats; and aluminum or wood interior trim.

The M6 is the high-performance version of the 6-Series that shares the 500-horsepower V10 engine with the M5 sedan. BMW does not refer to the M6 as the flagship of the M Car lineup, but more of a complement and a stablemate to the M5 sedan, with both cars delivering the top level of BMW M power and sophistication. The M6 returns to the BMW lineup after a hiatus of almost 20 years. The M6 features exterior and interior styling that reflects a balance of performance and luxury. The exterior styling is aggressive and one unique feature is the carbon fiber roof which not only offers weight savings but also lowers the center of gravity for performance improvements and adds a unique element of style. The 2006 BMW M6 is powered by a 500-horsepower 5.0-liter V10 combined with a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) that is a electrohydraulically actuated, electronically controlled seven-speed mechanical transmission with six sequential and five automated shift programs, and a twin-disc clutch. A six-speed manual transmission will be offered as an option at a later time. The front bumper, spoiler and air intake have an aggressive appearance, as do the rear bumper, spoiler and lower air diffuser. Gauges feature Titanium II finish for the outer rings of the speedometer and tachometer dials, illuminated scale rings, and red indicator needles. Heated M sport seats are standard, as well as Merino extended leather upholstery that includes leather on the seats, head restraints, door panels and center armrests. Optional full leather adds additional leather to portions of the seat, doors, console and dash, as well as Alcantara material for the headliner and roof pillars. The doorsills are illuminated with M6 logos and colors.

The Z4 M is the high-performance version of BMW's two-seat coupe and roadster that evolved from the Z3. The Z4 Roadster replaced the Z3 for 2003 and the Z4 Coupe joined the lineup for 2006, along with the M Coupe and M Roadster. The Z3 was the first of a new wave of German roadsters that was introduced in early 1996. The Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold in America since 1959, when the legendary 507 was discontinued. The M Roadster joined the Z3 Roadster for 1998 and the M Coupe debuted as a 1999 model, followed by the Z3 Coupe. While the Z3 featured retro styling that was reminiscent of classic roadsters, the Z4 features modern flame-surface styling. The 2006 BMW Z4 M is developed on the basis of the Z4 roadster but features more power and performance. Under the hood is a 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that delivers 330 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. BMW claims the Z4 M can go 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds versus the Z4's 5.6 seconds. The front suspension features a wider track and the rear suspension has a larger and stronger subframe than the Z4. Riding on standard 18-inch wheels, the Z4 M has a different front fascia and rear bumper as well as a standard fully automatic power soft-top. The brake system is the same one used in the M3 Competition Package, which consists of cross-drilled 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes." To read more about the 2006 BMW M Series, visit MSN Autos.
